Kochi Castle

Perched majestically atop a hill, Kochi Castle stands as a symbol of Japan's rich history and architectural prowess. Constructed between 1601 and 1611, and reconstructed in 1748 after a fire, it is one of the last twelve original castles in Japan and an Important National Cultural Property, according to the Japanese Government, and more specifically, the Agency for Cultural Affairs, responsible for the preservation and promotion of Japan’s cultural heritage.

As you explore the castle, you'll notice intricate details such as the statues of legendary Shachi sea creatures—half fish, half dragon—gazing down from the roof. The castle’s five-story height also provides stunning panoramic views of the area once ruled by feudal lords who resided within its walls. Surrounding the castle grounds, you'll also find the Kochi Castle Museum of History, a must-visit featuring 67,000 historical materials and artworks that delve deep into the region's past.

In spring, cherry blossoms and lanterns adorn the castle grounds, creating a striking contrast against the thick stone walls and offering a magical experience, especially during the evening illuminations.
