DISCOVER: Japan’s New Era

1st May 2019 marks the beginning of a new era in Japan – the Reiwa Period – when Emperor Akihito’s elder son, Naruhito, is expected to take the throne as the 126th Emperor of Japan.

To celebrate, Japanese ambigram artist Issei Nomura has created a graphic tribute to both the new era (Reiwa) and the current era (Heisei), which is drawing to a close. An ambigram is a word, art piece or symbol which can be interpreted differently when viewed from a different perspective. Nomura’s clever artwork does just this – viewed one way it reads ‘Reiwa’, but when flipped vertically it reads as ‘Heisei’ – the perfect symbol to mark a significant transition in Japanese culture.
