CRAFT: The Art of Japanese Paper Cutting

Artist Masayo Fukuda has been practising ‘Kirie’ – Japanese Paper cutting, for over 25 years. Literally translating as ‘cut picture’, Kirie is a traditional Japanese art where intricate designs are carefully revealed by cutting into a single sheet of white paper.

After selecting what she considered her best work of 2018, Fukuda propelled the craft to fame – capturing the attention of the internet with her life-sized paper octopus. Staggeringly detailed and beautifully executed, Fukuda’s octopus is a beautiful illustration of the skill and patience harnessed by Japan’s accomplished artisans.
