Murano’s Japanese Glass Artist

CRAFT: Murano’s Japanese Glass Artist

Italian craftsmen have been sculpting glass on the island of Murano, a mile north of Venice, for more than 1500 years. Amongst them, Japanese artist Ritsue Mishima is making her mark by collaborating with local makers to create sculptures unlike anything Murano has seen before. Whilst Italian glass is famous for its vibrant colour, Ritsue chooses to use only transparent glass in creating her artworks. Drawing inspiration from nature, in particular the surrounding water, Ritsue’s distinctive sculptures are a unique collaboration between Italian craft and Japanese design.
