FOOD: Red Bean Paste

Giving an undervalued food the attention it deserves, historic Kyoto confectioners Toraya have elevated humble Japanese favourite azuki bean paste, or ‘an’, by opening a string of beautifully designed eateries across the city.

Toraya invites Tokyoites to enjoy red bean paste in a number of creative sweet and savoury guises, from shaved ice to houji-tea and azuki bean soup. Head to any one of their city-centre cafes for a taste of one of Japan’s favourite sweet treats.
