CRAFT: The Japan-inspired illustrations of Ailsa Johnson

Since moving to Japan two years ago, a distinctly Japanese flavour has seeped into the work of illustrator Ailsa Johnson. Street vendors, kimono, temples and exotic foods are pictured in rich oriental colour as the essence of Johnson’s adopted home influences her vibrant artwork. Inspired by the unusual composition and two-dimensional style of ukiyo-e illustration, as well as the everyday magic found in the cultural rituals and superstitions, Johnson’s drawings are a uniquely surreal, east-meets-west take on Japanese tradition.
