NATURE: Underwater Mailbox

Twenty years ago, in Susami, Japan, postmaster Toshihiko Matsumoto dreamt up a unique way of boosting tourism to the sleepy seaside town. Teaming up with the local diving community, Mr Matsumoto installed a mailbox 10m underwater, inviting divers to post water-resistant cards from the ocean floor.

In a classic ‘if you build it they will come’ tale, the underwater mailbox soon put Susami on the map, and since 1999, almost 38,000 postcards have been mailed by way of the world’s only underwater post box.
