CRAFT: The Night in Prison
Nara Prison, which was built in 1908 and closed its doors just last year, is being preserved due to its architectural significance and is set to reopen as a hotel in 2020. The historic red brick structure was designed by architect Keijiro Yamashita, and built as an example of Japan’s new, ‘civilised’ criminal justice system after being forced out of isolation by the west.
Plans for the site include three separate hotels, one of which is being developed by MUJI, with the reopening set to coincide with the 2020 Olympics.
