WELLNESS: Live like a Local, Live off the Land

On the island of Teshima in the Inland Sea of Japan, there’s a unique accommodation option known as ‘minpaku’. The project is run by Naoshima’s Benesse Art Site and like Airbnb, allows visitors to stay in the homes of local residents. However, what makes minpaku lodgings unique is that guests are not only invited to stay, but to become an honorary member of the family by getting stuck into daily life in a working agricultural household.

There are nine homes on the island that have opened their doors to visitors, and guests can expect to work the land, help prepare meals, or even join their host on a fishing trip. Head to the Teshima Tourism Association website to book your stay.
