CRAFT: The World’s Most Beautiful Starbucks
Starbucks has taken over a 100-year-old Kyoto townhouse to create what has to be the world’s most beautiful branch of the global coffee giant. Taking up residence in the quiet town of Higashiyama, Kyoto, Starbucks’ latest concept cafe draws inspiration from its historical surroundings.
Once inhabited by geisha, the old machiya townhouse now specialises in coffee rather than tea, but Starbucks have remained faithful to the original design, with subtly-branded noren curtains dividing tatami matted rooms and carefully landscaped zen gardens. Visitors are expected to behave as they would in a traditional tea house by removing their shoes, sitting on silk cushions and maintaining a peaceful atmosphere – albeit whilst sipping on a Frappuccino.
