CRAFT: The 2020 Olympic Torch

The 2020 Olympic torch has been unveiled ahead of the games in Tokyo next year. Designed by Tokujin Yoshioka, the torch opens out to resemble a cherry blossom flower when viewed from above. Rose-gold (or ‘Sakura-gold’) in colour, the torch is made from extruded aluminium, reclaimed from temporary housing built in the aftermath of the Great East Japan earthquake and tsunami of 2011. Revealed just as Japan’s cherry trees burst into blossom – a symbol of life and renewal – Yoshioka hopes the torch will act as an emblem of peace and hope.

“In 2020, the Olympic flame will traverse throughout Japan like cherry blossoms blooming, and light our way to hope,“ – Tokujin Yoshioka
