CRAFT: The Cloth of the People

Visionary clothing brand Visvim are dedicated to exploring and preserving traditional Japanese craft. In their latest dissertation, Hiroki Nakamura delves into the history of Japan’s traditional yanai-jima textile – striped woven cotton popularly produced in the Meiji Period for everyday workwear.

Having almost completely disappeared from production, the discovery of one of the unique looms designed to weave yana-ijima cloth means the technique has been slowly revived by enthusiasts, with the Yanai-jima Preservation Society leading the charge.
