CRAFT: Made in Japan: Kasama Crafts

Surrounded by forest and farmland on the Kanto Plain, Kasama is a small city with a rich creative heritage. For centuries a home to artists and ceramicists, Kasama, just north of Tokyo in Ibaraki Prefecture, is one of Japan’s best-known art-and-craft towns.

Drawn to the region’s established craft traditions, recent years have seen an influx of young artists to Kasama, establishing a thriving contemporary craft community. Setting up workshops in the city and surrounding countryside, a broad range of artists, ceramicists in particular, are helping cement Kasama’s reputation as one of Japan’s most significant creative hubs.

Established 70 years ago, Kasama College of Ceramic Art, draws fresh talent to the area, whilst a number of local institutions help foster and promote the city’s creative community by hosting regular exhibitions and art sales. Easily accessible from Tokyo by train, Ibaraki Ceramic Art Museum, Kasama Art Park and Kasama Craft Hills represent a full-tour of the area’s vibrant art-and-craft scene. Working closely with the local creative community, Craft Council Kasama and WA Porter help local businesses thrive by promoting traditional Japanese crafts and introducing local artists to galleries and customers around the world.
