DISCOVER: Isle of the Sumo
Welcome to Amami Oshima, also known as Sumo Island. Found south of mainland Japan, this island of beautiful coastline and colourful reefs has traded its sandy beaches for the sand covered floors of dohyōs – sumo rings. Here, one of Japan’s century-old traditions is preserved as lifelong coaches instil the art of sumo into younger generations, bringing them up as the next wave of wrestlers.
If you fancy dining like a sumo, why not try a bowl of chanko nabe at any number of Japan’s sumo restaurants?
