DISCOVER: Ancient Japanese Rugby

As Japan proudly hosts 2019’s Rugby World Cup, many enthusiasts have chosen to look back into the rich history of the sport in Japan. Though it’s widely believed that rugby was only brought to Japan at the turn of the 20th century, this illustration from The Graphic magazine dating back to 1874 depicts a classic game of rugby taking place under the shadow of Mount Fuji, proving that the sport actually existed in Japan far earlier than previously thought.
