Captured over three years, Chris
Steele-Perkins’ ‘Fuji’ photo essay is a twenty-first century homage to nineteenth century master printmaker
Hokusai’s “36 views of Mount Fuji”. Just like Hokusai, Steele-Perkins chooses
to capture the everyday lives of the people surrounding the mountain, rather
than making Japan’s iconic peak the primary focus. The result is a sensitive
record of modern life in Japan, where Fujisan is the constant backdrop.
