FOOD: At Tokyo’s top vegan hang-outs

It wasn’t long ago that vegan travellers in Japan would have found themselves surviving off dairy free snacks from the local seven-eleven. But thankfully things have changed, and as the world embraces plant-based living, Japan has become a leading-light for innovative vegan eateries. Impressive, for a country whose love of raw fish runs deep…

Read on for our pick of Tokyo’s best-loved vegan haunts.

1. T’s Tantan

With a reputation that precedes itself, T’s Tantan is legendary amongst vegan travellers and Tokyoites alike. Tucked away inside bustling Tokyo Station, the unassuming noodle shop is an offshoot of Jiyugaoka eatery T’s Restaurant (also worth a visit) and gained a name for itself as the first restaurant to serve genuine vegan ramen in Tokyo. T’s Tantan has since acquired a legion of fans, who can often be seen queuing up for a signature bowl of Chinese-style dandanmen.

2. Rainbow Raw Food

If you like your food not just vegan but also raw, look no further than Rainbow Raw Food. A true rarity in Tokyo, this Ebisu favourite serves up 100-percent vegan food using only raw ingredients, at surprisingly reasonable prices. Café-by-day and restaurant-by-night, Rainbow’s extensive menu caters for raw-food newbies and aficionado’s alike. And when it’s not serving food to happy customers, Rainbow Raw Food plays host to vegan cooking lessons and nutrition-related seminars.

3. Restaurant 8ablish

Opening three years ago in the heart of Tokyo’s Omotesando district, Restaurant 8ablish is from the same stable as vegan mainstay Pure Café and sister establishment 8ablish café. But unlike its predecessors, Restaurant 8ablish sets out to elevate vegan food, offering a complex menu and fully-fledged dining experience. With the tagline ‘vegan for everyone’, Restaurant 8ablish promises to convert even the hardest vegan-sceptics.

4. Phono Kafe

Small but perfectly formed, this cosy café is a real hidden gem and a firm favourite amongst locals. With just three tables served in-person by the friendly proprietor, Phono Kafe is known as much for its homely atmosphere as its delicious, authentically Japanese vegan fare. And with lunch sets for only ¥1000, this Tokyo ‘anaba’ is well worth the visit.
