DISCOVER: Traditional Japanese Badminton

Discover hanetsuki, the ancient Japanese game surprisingly similar to modern-day badminton. Traditionally played to celebrate the New Year, hanetsuki requires two participants to keep a shuttle in the air with wooden paddles – the hagoita. The biggest difference between hanetsuki and modern badminton is the addition of the net, and though the traditional game may not quite be popular enough to appear in the Olympics, its legacy lives on in the numerous ornamental hagoita that are decorated and adorned with classical art and kabuki scenes.
