NATURE: Slow Living with Japan’s Pearl Divers
Aiko Ono was a photographer in Tokyo before she traded her high octane city life for slow living by the sea. In the quiet town of Tobu, Aiko retrained as an ‘ama’ – a female free diver – and now spends her days scouring the ocean floor for seafood and pearls without the aid of an air tank.
Setting their days by the rhythms of the ocean, Aiko and her fellow ama find peace, joy and honour in upholding a Japanese tradition that dates back 3000 years.
