DISCOVER: Holy beats from Japan’s DJ Monk
With seventeen generations of Buddhist monks behind him, Gyosen Asakura is breaking with tradition by bringing techno-worship to his 540-year-old family-run temple.
On noticing visitor numbers declining, Asakura was inspired to do something different, creating ‘Techno Hoyo’ by drawing on his experience as a DJ and lighting technician. Setting Buddhist sutras to rhythmic beats and flooding the temple walls with mesmerising light projections, the immersive techno temple now attracts hundreds of visitors – reigniting passions for weekly worship.
