WELLNESS: In the Yoshino Cedar House

Nestled beside the river in Yoshino, Nara prefecture, an innovative new guest house sits perfectly at home amongst the densest cedar forests in the world. Conceived as part of Tokyo’s House Vision exhibition the Yoshino Cedar House is a collaboration between Airbnb and architect Go Hasegawa. Constructed with provenance in mind, the house is built using local materials, by members of the local community, and is purposefully designed to bring guests and community together.

More than just a guest house, the Yoshino Cedar House is intended as a flagship initiative for boosting rural economies through tourism. By directly encouraging integration between guests and local community, it’s hoped the house will create opportunities and ultimately discourage young people from abandoning their hometowns in favour of the city.
