WELLNESS: In a Rural Conservation Project

With a mission to combat rural decline, Hinui Hitohi (‘one day in Hinui’) is an innovative hotel project lead by Osaka-based design firm UMA. Set to breathe new life into the small hamlet of Hinui, Shimane Prefecture, the initiative brings together local architects, designers and chefs. Reinventing a series of vacant townhouses, the team have collaborated to create spaces and experiences aimed at immersing guests in the local landscape, culture and community.

The guesthouse consists of two buildings – the first, ‘Ichiyu’, is a former factory, reimagined by Masaki Kato as a reception area for guests, whilst the second, ‘Yasuda-tei’, serves as accommodation for six, designed by Dot Architects. To compliment interiors designed to blend with the local landscape, a series of experiences from cooking classes to craft workshops encourage visitors to connect with and learn from the surrounding community. Visit the Hinui Hitohi website to book your stay.
