CRAFT: Himeji’s Club Craftsman

Himeji is best known to many for its magnificent feudal castle.  However, it’s the town’s history of Samurai sword forging that has made a reappearance recently, as craftsman Katsuhiro Miura creates a new weapon for the modern sportsperson.

Katsuhiro Miura is known as one of the most sought-after golf iron crafters in the world. His surrounding is so mysterious it has even led many enthusiasts to rumour him as the maker of Tiger Woods’ iconic winning clubs during the height of his career. Having handcrafted some of the world’s finest golf clubs since beginning in 1957, Miura has a unique patented forging process that has earned him the nickname ‘Hands of God’ to those in the know.

To create the perfect golf club, Miura knew he had to approach forging in a brand-new way – using premium soft carbon steel with an innovative two strike compression method means Miura’s clubs achieve the highest tolerances in the industry. Once ground, the club heads are polished before being hand-finished and checked by the master craftsman himself.
