NATURE: Junya Ishigami’s Mesmerising Water Garden

A poetic artificial landscape created by Japanese architect Junya Ishigami has garnered international recognition after becoming the inaugural winner of the Obel Award — one of the world’s richest prizes for architecture.

Located near the Nasu Mountains, Art Biotop Water Garden was carefully created over four years, uprooting 318 mature trees and replanting them in a carpet of moss, surrounded by 160 small ponds linked by stepping-stone paths. Simultaneously highly artificial and undeniably organic, Ishigami’s carefully structured forest and manmade pools – or biotopes – have created miniature habitats for numerous plants and animals. Art Biotop Water Garden is a living sculpture and was selected by the jury for demonstrating how human intervention can enhance a landscape, rather than damage it.
