DISCOVER: Hokusai’s Great Wave, Emblazoned on Banknotes

A redesign of Japan’s banknotes is set to coincide with the new imperial era this month. Amongst the new designs, Hokusai’s iconic The Great Wave off Kanagawa is set to adorn the 1000-yen note, giving everyone the chance to carry a masterpiece around in their pocket. Other denominations will immortalise historic figures, including educational reformist Tsuda Umeko and industrialist Eiichi Shibusawa – the ‘father of Japanese capitalism’. But whilst the designs pay tribute to the past, the new notes are set to feature pioneering anti-counterfeiting techniques, including elaborate watermarks and 3D holograms that appear to move the artwork as the bills are rotated.
