Nikobuchi Waterfall

Niyodo River

Nikobuchi Waterfall

Tucked away upstream on the Niyodo River, Nikobuchi Waterfall is a hidden gem that beckons adventurers and nature lovers alike. This enchanting spot is renowned for the “Niyodo Blue” phenomenon—a term coined by nature photographer Nobuyuki Takahashi, who captured the unique colour produced when sunlight illuminates the pool’s surface. While midday is the prime time to witness the pool in its full Niyodo Blue glory, the spectrum of green and blue hues throughout the day, make any visit a visual treat.

But more than its spectacular visual appeal, the spot is also steeped in local legend. According to Japanese folklore, the waters are the dwelling place of a water god, who manifests itself in the form of a giant mythical snake. As the site is considered sacred by residents, visitors are kindly reminded to honour the sanctity of Nikobuchi Waterfall by refraining from swimming and embracing the tranquil ambiance.

Accessing the waterfall requires navigating slippery rocks by the water's edge and a steep climb, so be sure to wear sturdy shoes. However, the journey promises breathtaking sights and perhaps even a glimmer of mythical snake scales gliding through the deep waters beneath the waterfall.
